Valentine’s Day Party

Our Valentines Day Party will be on Friday February 12th at 2:30pm.  Children are invited to bring in valentines for classmates, however if you choose to send in valentines, there must be one for each child in the class (see enclosed class list). If you choose to send in candy as part of your valentine, please remember that multiple children in our class are allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and eggs. If candy is processed in a factory with any of these items, it cannot come to school. Thank you for your support with this! The fabulous Mrs. Tursi will once again be coordinating food for our party. If you are able to send in food, please contact her at telen@metrocast.net so she can let you know what we need.

100th Day

The 100th day of school will be on Wednesday February 10th! We will celebrate through math, literacy, and art activities with the whole first grade. We ask that each child bring in a collection of 100 special things. This can be anything small – toy cars, barrettes, legos, puzzle pieces, etc. We will display and share our collections throughout the day. Please have your child count out his own 100 items. We suggest doing this by putting items in piles of ten.

Arts Week

Next week is Arts Week here at Strafford School! The students will have the opportunity to work with a visiting artist. To prepare for his visit, and to celebrate the arts, each class is working on small pieces of art that will be transformed into a mural. We will also be painting our classroom doors to reflect what we have learned about the arctic and Antarctica. Feel free to stop by and check it out!

Sharing

Please remember that toys are not allowed in school. They cause many distractions throughout the day. Appropriate items for sharing time include photographs, artwork, things from nature, brochures from trips and books. Thank you!

Math

We are working on many skills in math. Your child is now able to tell time to the hour! We will soon learn about telling time to the half hour. We continue to work on developing number sense as well as our addition and subtraction skills. Please check you child’s folder for a packet filled with ideas for fun ways to practice math at home!

Book Journals

What a great bunch of readers we have in 1Q! They are really beginning to comprehend and think about what they are reading. To foster these skills, we will start to reflect on what we read in book journals. Each child will write about books he or she has particularly enjoyed, and share them with the class. Children will also have the opportunity to recommend books to each other.

As always, I appreciate your ongoing support! Please do not hesitate to contact me with question or concerns. Although there were not official conferences for the second quarter, I am happy to meet with anyone who would like to discuss their child’s progress.

All Best,

Ali Quinton
